Faen. That meant that Cannon would be on campus, and… “If that’s what you want to do, Cannon.” He hefted his briefcase and shut down his computer. “I’m done here. You want to grab a meal before we head home?”

“Actually.” A faint pink blush highlighted Cannon’s thin, sharp cheekbones. “I wanted to invite you to dinner and a night out at the Weatherford…” His voice trailed off and he ducked his head.

“Like the night we met, only without the blizzard?” Finn smiled wickedly, revealing neat white teeth and lightening his whole demeanor. “I would love to, but I didn’t bring any clothes.”

Cannon laughed a little breathlessly, and Finn felt warm inside instead of guilty. He was going to take this offer for a night at the Weatherford as a time-out in the joust that his life had become. Perpetually balancing Lassiter’s clinging, needy emotional state while the psychologist tried to get him to commit himself willingly for treatment, meant ignoring his own antipathy toward the man and hiding their unwelcome connection from his family and friends.

Meeting Lassiter in town whenever he'd called had kept Lassiter away from Mountain Shadows, not that his absence had slowed the rate of vandalism any, but what he’d envisioned as an occasional meeting, had turned out to be a constant flood of passive-aggressive demands. Over the last six weeks, he’d found himself embroiled in the task of shoring up Lassiter’s emotions, and it rankled more than he’d thought it would.

A hero shouldn’t wish for the death of a pathetic figure like that, but he could certainly take a day off to enjoy his boyfriend, couldn’t he?

“If you recall, I didn’t have anything the first day,” Cannon reminded him with a quick grin. “I do however have a reservation, and I won't even pretend that there’s a couch for you to sleep on.”

Grasping at the freedom from the burden he’d been carrying, Finn nodded. “Excellent. I’ll happily ply you with alcohol and delicious food, good music and a romantic atmosphere just to seduce you into my bed again.”

“Hey! You can’t steal my seduction plan!” Cannon gave a short bark of laughter.

Finn opened the door, waving Cannon ahead of him. “Of course I can, especially since you essentially plagiarized my original plan. Do you want to drive separately or should we just take one car over and pick up the other tomorrow?” He turned the lock and shut the door quietly. His cell phone vibrated in his pocket, but Finn ignored it.

“I don’t think you can claim a copyright on a night out on the town that ends in a motel. It’s kind of everybody’s story, isn’t it? What do they call that? A common theme?”

“A trope. I guess you’re right. But the Weatherford…that’s clearly something you borrowed from me,” he teased.

Cannon grinned. “Well, I rather thought that my odds of getting some would improve if I picked a place that you liked…your own stomping grounds so to speak.”

He let Cannon walk a little ahead of him
